Hawkins never thought that he could accidentally cross paths with a man and immediately begin a storm of affection with him that would last from year to year, tormenting both of them. For forty years they had to fight off attacks, bullying, AIDS, and self-doubt. Maybe if it weren't for all these obstacles, they wouldn't drink each other's blood like that; but perhaps such a shake-up was what kept them together.
