Another serious problem is all-round sterility, that is why nearly every fertile female is considered to be a "handmaid", forced to render sexual services to her Commander in order to become a rent-a-womb for her master's family. After delivering a child, a woman is separated from it and disposed to a new Commander. The story begins with June's (the main character) failed attempt to leave Gilead with her family, her husband and daughter, and becoming a handmaid. Throughout the entire plotline she tries to reunite with her family.
